— Burman to Louis Berry on Circle of Inevitability, Chapter 528 |
Demon Warlock Burman is a former adventurer who became a wanted criminal due to his mad attempts to resurrect his dead wife. He is a Sequence 6 Spirit Guide of the Death Pathway and was originally of the Hermit Pathway.
Appearance[]
Burman usually wore a black robe with a deep hood. He had cold flaxen-colored irises and a pale-white face marked by decaying wounds and a wide swath of fur. He looked more like an undying monster rather than a human.
Personality[]
His mental state was extremely unstable, burdened by severe psychological issues. He was also half-mad due to switching to a non-neighboring pathway.
Background[]
Burman originated from Fog Sea Province. He led a life of adventure, pursuing both treasures and bounties. Along the way, he crossed paths with his future wife, Helen, herself an intrepid explorer hailing from Port Farim. Both had experienced fortuitous encounters during their adventures, gaining superpowers. They had acquired property in Port Farim, planning a future away from the adventurous life after they grew older.
Several years prior, Burman, Helen, and a group of companions embarked on a sea voyage in search of treasure. However, their expedition took a tragic turn when the treasure map they obtained from Mark Benito, an islander, led them into the path of sea monsters, resulting in the loss of all but Burman and two others. Following this devastating event, Burman devoted himself to finding a way to bring his wife back to life.[1]
He was originally a Sequence 7 Warlock of the Hermit Pathway, but to revive his wife, he forcibly switched to the non-neighboring Death Pathway and became a Sequence 6 Spirit Guide.[2] He went half-mad as a result, becoming half-human and half-monster, but also gained powerful and unnatural abilities like the 'Eye of Illusory'.[3]
According to Burman's notebook, he encountered Harrison, a native of Resurrection Island, who imparted knowledge about the Death domain to him. Armed with this newfound knowledge, Burman successfully summoned an evil spirit named Arden. Burman vanquished it and collected it blood for a subsequent ritual.[2]
He once mercilessly orchestrated the destruction of a 300-person town to fulfill the conditions for a resurrection ritual. He organized gatherings of evil Warlocks, aiming to use the lives of others, especially newborns, for cruel and bloody witchcraft to revive Helen. These events pushed his bounty to surpass Bone Splitter Basil, reaching 600,000 verl d'or.[4]
History[]
Burman once orchestrated a massive explosion near the governor-general's office in Port Farim. Soon after, a horde of undead zombies emerged and started attacking the public. Lumian Lee, who was in Port Farim as 'Louis Berry' at the time, helped in subduing the zombies and evacuating people.[5]
The following day, Lumian's investigations led him to suspect Fidel Guerra, a prominent merchant from whom he had accepted a commission to hunt down Black Baronet Class Khizi, had ties to Burman.[6] Soon after, Lumian was attacked at his residence by Burman, but was defeated and escaped shortly. Lumian then visited Fidel Guerra's house, only to discover that every person there, including Fidel Guerra, had been killed and turned into an undead monstrosity by Burman.[7]
Later, by putting himself in Burman's shoes and using information received from Franca, Lumian eventually found Burman in the Andatna volcano mine of Port Farim. After a brief conversation, the two fought, and Burman, who was already half-mad and injured, was killed by Lumian.[8]
Lumian donated the 600,000 verl d'or bounty of the Demon Warlock and most of the items found in his possession to the Church of the Fool and established a charity fund named the 'Helen Charity Fund'.[9]
Lumian got some of Arden's bloodstain powder from Burman's room. Madam Magician suspected that the 'Arden' evil spirit summoned and subsequently killed by Burman for a ritual might have been the real cause of Burmans severe mental decline and that it might still be alive.[10] It was later revealed, after Ludwig consumed half of the powder, that it was intricately linked to death and the Spirit World, and, originated from Burman's own blood. This revelation indicated that Burman had summoned his own marking, eliminated it, and then harvested his own blood for ritual.[11]
Trivia[]
- Due to their similar circumstances, Lumian Lee sympathized a lot with Burman.[4]
- Because he was deceived by islanders who indirectly caused his wife's death, he became very hateful of them and will kill all deceiving islanders.[12]
