— Charlie on Circle of Inevitability, Chapter 112 |
Charlie is a tenant who lived in Room 504 of the Auberge du Coq Doré Hotel. He formerly worked an apprentice attendant at Hôtel du Cygne Blanc in Quartier des Thermes, then later he worked as a waiter at Salle de Bal Brise. Presently he is part of the clerical staff of the Church of the Eternal Blazing Sun.
Appearance[]
He was quite young, around 22 or 23 years old. He had short, light-brown hair and a clean-shaven face. His height was over 1.7 meters. However, his unusually short limbs made him appear closer to 1.6 meters. He had blue eyes.
History[]
Charlie came to Trier with the intention of making a fortune, but his plans took a turn for the worse when he lost his job and was fired by his manager. Despite his efforts, he struggled to find a new job and eventually depleted his savings. As a result, he found himself starving for five days, desperate for a solution. In his time of need, he turned to a portrait of a lady in his room whom he believed to be Saint Viève and fervently prayed to her. Miraculously, his prayers were answered when his friend found him and reminded Charlie that he could return a lamp he had rented and get back the deposit. With this money, Charlie alleviated his hunger. Later, he also managed to find a new job.[3]
However, according to the bartender, the portrait that Charlie believed to be Saint Viève was actually Susanna Matisse, one of Trier’s most famous prostitutes.[3]
He was involved in Madame Alice's case as he was suspected of murdering her[4], but Lumian Lee posed as his lawyer and convinced him to reveal the supernatural nature of the murder. He was released not long after by the authorities.[5]
Due to the case, he lost his job at the Hôtel du Cygne Blanc as the foreman believed that he had tarnished the hotel's image.
It was revealed that Susanna Matisse was in fact an Evil Spirit who sought out other targets, infiltrating their dreams and draining their energy. Charlie became her target. Lumian managed to save him through quick thinking and by making use of the Montsouris Ghost curse that was on Fallen Mercury.[6]
When Lumian was put in charge of Salle de Bal Brise, he offered Charlie a job there as a waiter.[2]
Some time later Lumian while in disguise used his abilities as an Alms Monk to read Charlie's fortune and saw extreme danger. He promptly went to seek help from Franca, suspecting Susanna Matisse to be the source of the danger. While Lumian and Franca were in a different place, Rentas, who was Impersonating Lumian at the time, came and led Charlie to the Underground Trier. Franca and Lumian promptly gave chase, managing to kill Rentas and save Charlie.
Afterward, Angoulême de François came to offer Charlie a job as a clerical staff of the Church of the Eternal Blazing Sun to provide him with enhanced protection.[7] Charlie agreed and moved out from the Auberge du Coq Doré Hotel. In the Inquisition beneath Église Saint-Robert, he had come across Lumian's wanted poster and recognized his friend, yet he didn’t inform the deacon.[1]
Later, Jenna in her role as an informant told the Purifiers that Ciel Dubois and Lumian Lee were the same person. In order to protect Charlie from the consequences of hiding this from the Purifiers, Lumian met him at midnight and punched him in the face, saying that it was for not telling him that he was wanted by the Church of the Eternal Blazing Sun. The next morning, when Angoulême de François enquired about Charlie's injuries, he answered honestly. The fact that he didn't pass information to Lumian contributed to Charlie being allowed to continue working at the Church, though he was placed on a six-month probation.[8]
