“There are some things that make it easier to be ‘infected’ the more you know.”
This article contains MAJOR SPOILERS relating to some of the most pivotal parts of the "Lord of Mysteries".

City of Silver, formerly the Kingdom of Silver, is situated in the Forsaken Land of the Gods (Eastern Continent) and is covered by constant lightning strikes. To differentiate time, the day is when the lightning is most active and the night is when the lightning slows down. Many of the Beyonder inhabitants are of the Twilight Giant Pathway. Until arriving outside the Forsaken Land, they call themselves the "People of the Dark". Nearby in the darkness is a desolate moor. At the end of the moor was a pitch-black city overgrown with weeds, the City of Silver.[3]

The residents of the City of Silver believed in the Ancient Sun God since the Third Epoch, the one they call the “Omnipotent and Omniscient God, the Lord that created everything”, or "The Creator". Later they changed their faith to The Fool in 1352 of the Fifth Epoch.

The City of Silver has been trying to pray The Creator through rituals, though all attempts failed.[4] Meanwhile, they have been exploring outside the city, for valuable materials, and for reaching out to other people. For the longest time, they believed themselves to be the only group of humans alive.

  • On June 21, 1350, the City of Silver finally received a normal response from a God after 2,583 years.[4]
  • In 1351, they explored the remains of the Giant King's Court, and finally succeeded in connecting to the outside world through the Court by 1352.
  • In 1352, all the inhabitants of the City of Silver and Moon City were relocated to the forest of the New City of Silver.
  • By 1358, the Church of the Fool's main headquarters was changed from Bayam to the New City of Silver (新白银城, Xīn Báiyín Chéng, New Silver City).[5]
  • As of July 1360, the two God-level Sealed Artifacts inherited by the New City of Silver were destroyed, first the Gift of the Land less than a month earlier[7] then later the Proof of Glory.[8][9]

History[]

City of Silver[]

The City of Silver was known as the Kingdom of Silver in the past. They were once ruled by the Giant King Aurmir and later came under its jurisdiction. According to the Sanguines' knowledge, they had a rather special position in the Giant King's Court. They didn’t directly believe in the Giant King and instead, they believed in the Giant Queen, Omebella, the Goddess of Harvest.[10]

After the rise of Ancient Sun God, they switched their belief to "Him" and believed "Him" as the Original Creator.

The Dark Ages of Kingdom of Silver had arrived, when the sun disappeared from the sky, the monsters lurking in the dark suddenly emerged. They destroyed one city after another in the Kingdom of Silver.

The remaining experts in the City of Silver relied on their united power and two magical items before they finally warded off the attack of the things of the dark. They gradually eradicated the monsters within a one-day journey of the city, and they established a city-state that protected the last light of human civilization. And it persisted in the Dark Ages for 2582 years.[11][4]

In order to survive, they endured the negative effect of the Gift of the Land.[12] Dying citizens turning into evil spirits unless killed by their blood relative became a natural fact for them.[11]

When the population returned to a certain level, the number of Beyonders increased. The six-member council started forming elite troops to explore the dark, hoping to find other survivors and collect resources. They explored all of the original territory and nearby cities. They discovered many ancient histories and secrets, they also obtained potion formulas of other Sequences but most pathways are incomplete. At the border, they found cities with strange architectural styles, but they were destroyed at some point. They suspect that they were sanctuaries built by other remaining humans. Unfortunately, they still lost to the Things of the Dark in the end.[11]

In the City of Silver, the frequency of lightning is use to demarcate days. It’s considered night when the lightning eases up and day when there’s plenty of lightning. One cycle is a day, and the four seasons only exist in books, so they can’t exactly grasp the specific number of days.[13]

After the exploration of True Creator's Temple, they realized that there was an outside world that wasn't in the darkness, and the path might be through the Giant King's Court. They then started clearing the path to the Giant King's Court, which was luckily not very far from the City of Silver.

In this aspect, the City of Silver is lucky. At least, they can see and have the ability to touch the light.

Amon to Klein Moretti
on Lord of Mysteries, Chapter 1158

On June 21, 1350, the current Chief Colin Iliad conducted a successful ritual to make two Fate Siphon charms with the help of Mr. Fool, finally allowing the City of Silver to have a normal response from a True God after 2,583 years.[4]

In the fall of 1351, the gate of Giant King's Court was finally pushed open. The Forsaken Land of Gods, after thousands of years, was connected to the rest of the world again. They switched their beliefs to Mr. Fool soon after.[12]

In the spring of 1352, Derrick led an exploration team with Liaval, Candice, Jinord and 17 others members of the exploration team, to establish the location for the New City of Silver in the Rorsted Archipelago near the City of Generosity, Bayam.[14] The three-man group of Derrick Berg, Jinord and Candice were the response group to contact Chief Waite.

The original City of Silver in the Forsaken Land of the Gods was abandoned to the wild nature with the migration to the New City of Silver.

New City of Silver[]

The first created architecture was the dungeon storage for Sealed Artifacts.[15]

In the New City of Silver, most of the inhabitants start to adapt to a new life, however, the six-member council had been troubled over how to earn gold pounds from the outside world and how to establish a stable financial system. Many people wish to be chefs and brewers, as well as hope to work at candy factories.[16]

By 1358, the New City of Silver became the new headquarters and one of the three Holy Lands of the Church of the Fool.[5] The New City of Silver had been established by the surviving humans rescued by Gehrman Sparrow from the cursed continent of the Forsaken Land of the Gods. Unexpectedly to foreigners, the surviving humans were towering figures, almost like giants! The shortest individuals on the street were at least 1.89 meters tall, with occasional figures reaching three to four meters. Clad in white shirts, black trench coats, and half-top hats, the men carried canes resembling spears, emitting an inexplicable sense of absurdity. Even the ladies matched the towering height, mostly opting for flexibility in long pants rather than skirts. Most doors within the New City of Silver were over four meters tall.[17] Also, below 1.8 meters inhabitants were a rarity, except for those with child-like faces.[18]

That’s right. All the warriors here are ready to defend Mr. Fool’s Church at all times!

— Livalie
on Circle of Inevitability, Chapter 629

In early Spring 1359, in the fields outside the New City of Silver, patches of wheat seedlings were lush green.[19] At night, the giant buildings had lit up with yellowish lights, the various mushrooms that were faintly visible in the streetlight glow, the silhouettes of giants and half-giants behind glass windows, raised wine glasses, wisps of cooking smoke, songs from nearby squares, the noise spilling out from bars, and the faint sounds of joy and laughter from different houses.[20]

Notable Locations[]

Twin Towers[]

There were twin towers on the north side of the original city. One of the spires of the Twin Towers served as the City of Silver’s library, an exchange spot where merit points could be use and daily necessities could be distributed. The other is a prison, those who show signs of losing control are also detained there, they will be treated with medicine, rituals, and mystical items. If the situation isn’t too serious, then they only need to consume medicine. The dome was where the six-member council resided and was rumored to contain a mystical item that had sustained the City of Silver for more than two thousand years, as well as a repository for formulas and ingredients.[13] The third floor contains a library collection, having some shelves where materials regarding mythology and the corresponding ancient books were stored.[21]

The New City of Silver's Twin Towers were located at a corner of the city. It was split into two sections. On the left, a spire tower; on the right, a domed tower. The outer wall, standing 30 to 40 meters tall, was a grayish-white hue. The spire houses the library and other public facilities, while the domed tower serves as the council office for the ruling six-member council of the city. Black Face Grass grew from cracks near the tower in the cracks between the bricks near the ground.[18][22] The spire had the steeple’s base was paved with black stone bricks, and a colossal pillar rose proudly.[23] The left tower had a pointed top and housed public facilities such as the library, while the right tower had a round top and was where the six-member council that governed the New City of Silver worked. In the pointed tower, visitors walked on large black stone slabs, pass huge pillars, and come to the library on the third floor.[22] One can enter the round tower from the second-floor connection, then descend all the way, passing through the deep dark dungeon, arriving at a pair of heavy stone doors. Behind the stone doors was a mottled staircase extending downwards, with points of light like dawn seeping from the depths, bringing some visibility. The walls on both sides of the staircase were damp, seemingly oozing many water droplets, and Black Face Grass had grown out of the cracks, hanging there. The further down the staircase went, the brighter the dawn-like light became, and the spirituality in the air also became increasingly lively and vigorous the closer to the Gift of the Land.[24] By June 1360, Elder Derrick exchanged the Boon Recipient artifact for the Calamity of Crimson crown.[8]

Spire's Bottom Prison[]

The walls of the cells, including the door, were all engraved with complicated and mysterious symbols and labels. They seemed to form a complete seal.[25]

Treating Rampagers[]

After a second-stage losing control Beyonder was sent to the bottom of the spire, they would either be treated with medicine, rituals, and other methods, slowly stabilizing themselves and allowing them to leave within eighteen months. Otherwise, they would quickly lose control and be purged. It was impossible for anyone to be locked up for forty-two years.

As a first-stage Beyonder, they would only take between a few days to less than twenty days to eliminate all the symptoms and leave, fully treated.[25]

Six-member Council[]

Through the initial hardships, the City has been ruled by a six-member council ever since. The highest position in the council is called the "Chief" and the other five are equal in rank and called "Elder". The basic requirement of an Elder is to have a power at the level of a demigod or a great potential.[11]

When Derrick Berg initially contacted the Tarot Club, the six-member council was led by Demon Hunter Chief Colin, 2 other Demon Hunters, 2 Guardians and 1 Shepherd.[11]

Military[]

Sealed Artifacts[]

The City of Silver also has the concept of Sealed Artifacts, but they use "God-level" and "Saint-level" instead of grades.

They have two God-level Sealed Artifacts that protect the city until mid-1360 of the Fifth Epoch.

One of them is the Gift of the Land, this Boon-based artifact came from the death of the Goddess of Harvest Omebella. This artifact provides the Black Flour Grass that fed all the citizens, but it also brings a curse that people would turn into monsters after they die. The only solution is to let their family kill them before they die. Those who died far from the City of Silver (beyond the range of Gift of the Land) do not turn into monsters.[12] In June 1360, Derrick Berg traded the Gift of the Land with Lumian Lee for the Calamity of Crimson.[8] It was destroyed alongside killing the sleeping Omebella's Thief to launch a symbolism-based offense on the Brood Hive-accommodating Mother Goddess of Depravity faraway on the Western Continent.[7]

The other artifact is the Proof of Glory, an artifact crown worn by the Giant King Aurmir. It is one of the main reasons the City of Silver can defend against the invasion of monsters in the Forsaken Land of the Gods. After Amon's Apotheosis Ritual, it was required by the New City of Silver to periodically restrain the Gift of the Land.[8] It was later destroyed to become a Beyonder characteristic for Waite Chirmont's advancement to Sequence 2.[9]

Aside from these two artifacts as of 1352, the City of Silver owned nearly ten Saint-level sealed artifacts and a small amount Beyonder Characteristic that can be used as grade 1 sealed artifacts.[26]

Pathways[]

Potion Formulas[]

So far, the City of Silver is confirmed to have the formulas of:

There also some formulas on non-official channels within the City of Silver. Some became the foundation of strong families from generation to generation. That's because people kept some of the loot privately. As long as it didn’t involve anything too important, the captains and higher-ups would tacitly overlook it.[34]

Inhabitants[]

Currently, they have one Sequence 3 Saint, two Sequence 4 Saints, and many Mid-Sequence Beyonders.

All inhabitants know the Acting Method,[35] the thing that prevents most of them from advancing are the rituals. Even without a potion formula, it is possible to directly consume a Beyonder characteristic to advance. The chances of success weren’t too low, but from Sequence 6 to 5, without the help of a ritual, the chances of success were very low. For this reason, Sequence 6 Beyonders were the majority, Sequence 5 became rare, and for Sequence 4 an entire generation might not even produce one.[31][27]

They can join the team that cleansed the "Things of the Dark" in the outskirts of the city by passing a combat examination.[36] A Captain of a patrol team is required to be at Sequence 7, while a Captain of an exploration requires a minimum of Sequence 6. It is also the condition to be entrusted with certain information such as the method to separate a Rampager’s mental corruption from a Beyonder characteristic.[13]

Since they have been using the potion of the Giant pathway for generations, all inhabitants have inherited the trait of being taller than normal humans. Other than children, even the residents who had yet to reach Sequence 6 had an average height exceeding 1.8 meters. Among them, there were no lack of Sequence 9 Beyonders who were more than two meters tall.[37] Even Derrick who took another pathway becomes taller than 2 meters with puberty.[32]

After starting the development of the New City of Silver, the inhabitants were reorganized: mercenary teams, culinary groups and supernatural enforcement sides.[16] By 1358, the New City of Silver's Demon Hunters populous increased and were a popular main mercenary force near the Seas.[6][38]

Noted by the New City of Silver era, inhabitants have both human's paleness and giant's grayish blue skin colors.[17][18]

Exploratory Team[]

Inhabitants who are issued to explore unknown territories of the Forsaken Land of the Gods around the City of Silver until 1352. Captain requirements: minimum Sequence 6.[13]

To the City of Silver’s exploration team, as long as they weren’t wearing clothes and armor that were mystical items, it was inevitable that their clothes would suffer damage during battle. Therefore, they definitely prepared a few additional sets ahead of time. To them, the purpose of clothing covering their bodies was secondary. The most important thing was to leave space to store materials, ointments, and charms.[48]

Patrol Team[]

Those who patrol the areas owned by the City of Silver, such as around Hawick's Mausoleum, to maintain safety for people to travel while eliminating monsters or creatures when necessary. Captain requirements: minimum Sequence 7.[13]

Others[]

  • Aiflor: She is the City's most experienced Psyche Analyst who was closest to Sequence 6.[50]
  • Livalie: Nearly three-meter tall original resident of the old City of Silver. Height increased by 30 centimeters since introducing food, meat and milk into his diet.[17][18]
  • Unnamed "Giant" in the Urinal: Over three meters tall, treasure surprised Lumian Lee into a daze.[18]
  • Unnamed Milk Seller: 2.56 meters tall male vendor with slightly grayish-blush skin.[18]
  • Unnamed Proselytizing Local: An unusually enthusiastic man with slightly grayish-blush skin, holding a thick The Fool's book.[18]
  • Unnamed Library Administrator of the New City of Silver's Twin Towers: Demon Hunter towering at over three meters.[23]
  • Rugest: A half-giant youth at about 2 meters tall, with slightly longer arms and legs, short curly brown hair that looked fluffy. He had thick eyebrows and big eyes, with a square face.[22]

Contribution Points System[]

There are typically two ways to handle the spoils from expeditions. First, it was to bring it back and give it to the city and exchange it for the corresponding contribution points. The distribution depended on the amount of effort put in during the expedition. Second, if it wasn’t something especially important, and if it had caught the fancy of a member of the expedition, they could directly make an exchange for it with equivalent items or contribution points.[51]

Items that can be obtained with contribution points:

Cultural[]

Society[]

In the City of Silver, before the age of eighteen, one could date freely until they were married. And if one didn’t have a partner at the age of eighteen, they would be arranged to have one. It was the same for widows and widowers after three years. This was a necessary measure to ensure the necessary population level for the City of Silver’s continuation. It seemed like it was against human rights, but for the continuation of the entire city in the dark lands, it could only be done this way. Furthermore, this could ensure that everyone had a certain number of close relatives, preventing the possibility of mutating into a terrifying evil spirit after their death.[45]

Every time they receive a bumper Black-Faced Grass harvest, they hold a sacrificial ritual. They use the monsters they captured in the depths of the darkness as sacrificial offerings. After they recite God’s honorable title and the necessary prayers, they dance for "Him" and then kill the monsters, to let their spirituality and tainted blood dye the entire altar. If they haven’t caught any monsters, then they use a sinner on the lowest floor in the City of Silver prison instead. Then, they turn the very first batch of Black-Faced Grass into food and serve it before the Lord. Finally, they sing praises in unison and end the ritual. It's one of the rare days when people could feel happy deep down in darkness with harsh survival conditions.[52][53]

Education[]

It’s clearly stated in our general education classes that the one and only key point for the ‘acting method’ is to ‘Remember that you’re only acting.'

Derrick Berg to the Tarot Club
on Lord of Mysteries, Chapter 158

The Acting Method is taught in general education classes.[35] There are general education classes, supplementary classes and combat training fields/practice grounds.[39][54] According to Derrick, they tend to focus on the practical courses such as Devil Studies[55], Monster Classification, Charms, and Beyonder Foundations, and everything that could be used to deal with monsters in the dark and increase the production of edible plants. As for supplementary classes like Myth Studies, they often didn’t pay much attention. But since the history regarding the City of Silver has proven to be able to make the residents more united, raise their sense of honor, and heighten their sense of mission, the six-member council is strict about it.[56] General Knowledge of Monsters lessons are used to train their instinct when dealing with danger: "When someone is speaking behind you, don’t turn around in a hurry!"[57] When reading Devil-related documents, one would likely need to first receive general education and listen to a teacher’s recount.[55]

The spirit world now only existed in the City of Silver's textbooks and various records, but no one could touch it.[4]

Language[]

Their common language is Jotun, but they can also understand Dragonese and Elvish.

After they left the Forsaken Land of the God and settled in the Rorsted Archipelago, they also learned Loenese, Ancient Feysac, Dutanese and others. By 1358, their public languages were Jotun and Ancient Feysac.[18]

Religion[]

The ancient Kingdom of Silver religion was the Goddess of Harvest Omebella, after "Her" death they convert to the Giant King Aurmir, and after "His" death they converted to the Ancient Sun God.

With the disappearance of the Ancient Sun God and the curse of the Forsaken Land, the City of Silver believed they were abandoned by God, and tried to show repentance and make sacrifices to regain "His" favor, some having left it as a customary action of hope, but many expected that the sacrifices and the repentance of the City of Silver would earn them a response.[58]

Yes, we believe that we will regain the Lord’s favor in the end. Perhaps, it will be on the day the sun rises again. We were once ruled by the giants’ royal family, and we worshiped the Giant King Aurmir. Later, we were saved by the Lord and we will never betray the Lord again.

Derrick Berg answered to the Fool in an uncertain tone
on Lord of Mysteries, Chapter 180

From time to time, certain residents would be enticed by unknown existences during their patrols or exploration, tempted to hold all kinds of rituals. On the one hand, the cumulative despair of not receiving any response from the Creator had made them eager to grab onto any other existence to rely on, and on the other hand, many generations of the six-member council had come to a common consensus that the Creator who had abandoned the land might very well not return again. Seeking out other alternatives was something that had to be expedited, but unfortunately, such attempts only led to nothing or death.[4]

With the completed exploration of the Giant King's Court, the City of Silver mostly converted to the Church of the Fool. Proselytizing locals would honestly attempt to recruit foreigners and possess milk candies as gifts per individual.[18]

Cuisine[]

Because of the drastically dangerous environment of the Forsaken Land of the Gods and Gift of the Land, normal food resources could not be discovered or cultivated by the inhabitants of the City of Silver for over 2580 years. The inhabitants had to rely on Black-Faced Grass, water and the occasional weird creature meats for two millennia.

Through Derrick Berg's connection to the Tarot Club, Frank's nocturnal mushrooms that can use monsters as nutrients, forming all kinds of fruits that do not contain toxins and madness were introduced to the City of Silver's diet. By 1358, Frank's mushrooms have become sources of daily ingredient producers for the New City of Silver. A local specialty was Black-Faced Beer, but because the inhabitants consider alcoholism debased, indulgent, and a waste of food, they reject liquor. Milk candies were made from Frank's mushroom milks.[18]

Monetary[]

Until 1352 of the Fifth Epoch, the City of Silver followed the rules of barter and exchange to obtain materials in the Forsaken Land of the Gods. In the New City of Silver by 1358, the official currency was not verl d'or and gold risot, but gold because itself was universal.[18]
