One of the four major nations located on the East of the Northern Continent. It was founded by the Augustus Family in the Fourth Epoch, after the Trunsoest Empire was destroyed.
The Loen Kingdom's industrial and economic strength is very strong. As of 1358 of the Fifth Epoch, it is the strongest nation on the Northern Continent followed by the Intis Republic, the Feynapotter Kingdom, and the Feysac Empire.
After the death of George Augustus III in December 1350, Jevington Augustus was crowned the King of the Kingdom.
It had three main religions: The Church of the Evernight Goddess, the Church of the Lord of Storms, and the Church of the God of Steam and Machinery. After the 1350 World War, the Church of the God of Steam and Machinery influence was greatly weakened, and the influence of the Church of the Earth Mother has grown.
The most notable Beyonders are of the Justiciar, Black Emperor, Darkness, and Tyrant Pathway.
Geography[]
The Loen Kingdom is situated on the eastern part of the Northern Continent. Bordered to the north by Midseashire lake and the Feysac Empire which is separated by Winter County's Amantha Mountain Range, to the east by the Sonia Sea, to the south by Desi Bay (one-third of which belongs to the Feynapotter Kingdom) and the Berserk Sea, to the southwest by Lenburg, and to the west by the Intis Republic which is separated by the Hornacis Mountain Range. It occupied several of the excellent entrances to the Berserk Sea, but it didn’t involve the Fog Sea.[1]
The biggest river in the Loen Kingdom was Tussock River, coming down from the northwest where the Mirminsk mountain was. It flowed towards the southeast, passing by the Midseashire, Awwa County, and then passing through the capital, Backlund, and into the sea near Pritz Harbor.[2]
History[]
Fourth Epoch[]
During the rule of the Night Emperor, the entirety of today's Loen Kingdom was a part of the Trunsoest Empire.[3]
After the War of the Four Emperors, the Northern Continent was divided among the Angel Families of the destroyed Trunsoest Empire. The Augustus Family established and became the royal family of the Loen Kingdom.
Fifth Epoch[]
In 621-642, the Loen Kingdom and Feysac Empire fought against each other, and eventually, Loen lost the war and lost Sonia Island. Sometime later, Loen fought another war, namely White Rose War. During this war, Loen defeated Intis and became powerful again.
In 738, the Loen Kingdom and the Intis Kingdom seized the opportunity of the Battle of the Violated Oath in Feynapotter Kingdom to start a war in the name of protecting freedom of religion. In the late stages of the war, the Feysac Empire joined the fray and attempted to destroy the ploy by Loen and Intis. However, they still failed to turn the situation around.
Starting at 1194, after Emperor Roselle of Intis discovered a new safer sea route to the Southern Continent. This discovery jumpstarted the colonization of the Southern Continent, which was also known as the invasion of the Northern Continent. The Loen Kingdom and the Feysac Empire have been fighting over East Balam for a long time. Eventually it became the Loen's colony. The Intis Republic and the Loen Kingdom both had colonies West Balam and constantly fighting each other, while the Feysac Empire also have deep influence there trying to get a piece of the cake. The crown of the Balam Empire was obtained by Augustus Family. The king of the Loen Kingdom then gave himself the title "Emperor of the Balam Empire".[4]
A great plague occurred twenty years before 1349, inducing Backlund to establish a sewer system better than the one made by Roselle Gustav.[5]
In October 1350, the Feysac Empire attacked the capital of the Loen Kingdom, Backlund. On the same night, their Sonia Sea fleet attacked the Loen Imperial Navy's main base in Oak Island. The next day, the Loen Kingdom declared the war on the Feysac Empire.[6]
Feysac and Loen's battle focused on three locations: the Amantha Mountain range: Winter County (where the headquarters of Church of the Evernight Goddess, Church of Serenity, is located), heavy-industrial cities on the east coast of Midseashire, and the important harbors by Sonia Sea. Feysac and Loen's colonial army in East Balam also started battling.
However, in 1351, the war progressed further, and the main battlefield was moved to Backlund, with Danitz as Sea God's Oracle helping, the Resistance made an agreement with the Church of the Lord of Storms and the Military of the Loen Kingdom. The agreement consisted of independence for the natives to administer their local affairs and the belief of the Church of the Sea God. In return, the Resistance would protect the interests of the Loen migrants in the Rorsted Archipelago from the invasion of the Feysac Empire, the Feynapotter Kingdom, and the Intis Republic. This will allow the Church of the Lord of Storms and military to return to Backlund where the war was more concentrated.[7]
The war ended in year 1352, the Loen Kingdom won the war.[8]
Politics[]
The Loen Kingdom is ruled by the Augustus Family.
Each king is limited by three major contracts, and can only reach a limit of sequence 5 due to the necessity to keep mysticism under wraps.[9] The demigods and angels of the family do not hold official positions, and avoid to appear in public for the same reason.[10]
The government structure is based on Victorian England, with Prime Minister and Parliaments (the House of Lords and the House of Commons). The current Prime Minister of the Cabinet is Aguesid Negan, Pallas Negan's brother.[11]
Previously the political system in the Loen Kingdom was still in its preliminary stages. Every election in government, if there was a change of the ruling party, there would be a change of personnel from top to bottom. This lowered efficiency greatly.
Klein had raised a suggestion through Audrey to instead hold 'the Civil Servant Unified Examination'. This examination would be open to the public to select elites that could fill civil service positions such as the Secretary of the Cabinet, the county government, the city government, and the various towns. This solution would also ensure governmental functionality regardless of changes of the party in power.[12][13]
Domestic Disputes[]
As the industrial revolution is ongoing, the New party emerged, formed by mainly capitalists (bankers, factory owners, etc.), while the old party are the nobles who own large amounts of land. The two parties have conflicts on many issues.
Pallas Negan’s death has exacerbated disputes in the House of Lords. Nearly ten members have jointly proposed that the newly conferred nobility should get a seat in the House of Lords. This dispute has put many bills on hold, including, the raising of worker salary, the improvement of working hours, and revising the Poor Law.
After the Great Smog of Backlund incident, George Augustus III approved all of it. He even allows the three churches to send their personnel into the military. The incident also pushes pollution control policies.[14]
Military[]
The Loen Kingdom has the strongest military in the Northern and Southern continents. Quasi-high-ranking members of the military at the rank of colonel were mostly Mid-Sequence Beyonders.[15] Their headquarter is in Backlund and the military base is located at Desi Bay's Eskelson Harbor.[16]
The Church of the Lord of Storms’s influence on the military is greater than the other two major Churches.[17]
In Loen's army, Soldiers wear red tops and white pants with rifles in hand, the Royal Guard wear the same, but have many medals on their chests. Some use Steam-pressured rifles.
MI9[]
MI9 is an intelligence agency and special department of the military with official Beyonders.
[]
The Royal Navy, also called the Imperial Navy, has their main base at Pritz Harbor’s Oak Island.[18] Their influence is on the sea and the colonial islands, Rorsted Archipelago.
According to the documents Klein had access to while acting as Amyrius Rieveldt, Admirals who are from the royal family or aristocrats, or have close ties with them take up at least 80%. The remaining 20% are mainly rear admirals and vice admirals.[19]
The Royal Navy’s uses ironcland warships.
- The Pritz - The newest and the latest ironclad warship of the royal navy’s Pritz Harbor in Oak Island.
Domestic Law Enforcement[]
Beyonder related incidents and crimes are handled by the MI9, Nighthawks,Mandated Punishers, Machinery Hivemind and Beyonder team from the Church of the Earth Mother.
In the Loen Kingdom, the principle of jurisdiction over Beyonder events was first to divide them according to the beliefs of the victims. If they involved the followers of multiple deities, then it would be decided according to who held jurisdiction over the area.[20]
As a result of the Church of the Evernight Goddess's active push for years, the Loen Kingdom was more radical in its marriage laws than the other countries, such as Feysac, Intis, and Lenburg. It stipulated that those who committed adultery had to pay a financial price for it, which meant that the adulterer would be at an absolute disadvantage during the division of property.[21]
Characteristic[]
Loenese are known to be conservative, they find it challenging to accept extramarital affairs, emphasizing the importance of fidelity in marriage.[22]
Due to the Evernight Goddess's and God of Steam and Machinery's attitudes towards women, women in the Loen Kingdom had a relatively higher status, being able to go to schools and work.
The Church of the Evernight Goddess had always encouraged female believers to go out to work and engage in certain occupations. In the aristocratic circles, many young ladies and women became literary critics, musicians, pianists, painters, etc.[23]
Many Loenians lacking significant hair volume.[24]
Loenians have lower average lifespan than the Feynapotter Kingdom's, whose many Feynapotterians lived beyond the age of 70.[25]
Cultural[]
Nobility[]
The Loen Nobility holds titles such as duke, marquess, earl, viscount, or baron, ranking just below royalty. Historically, membership in the nobility has been bestowed by the king, though some individuals have acquired titles through financial means.
For instance, a baronetcy typically costs around 300,000 pounds, while a baron title may require around 800,000 pounds.[26]
Families without thousand-year-old histories, even newly established ancient aristocrats from the Fourth Epoch of the Loen Kingdom, weren't entirely loyal to the royal family or the top military ranks. They weren't granted any potion formulas.[27]
In the upper-class society, where followers of the Lord of Storms are predominant, discussions on national affairs were scheduled during the stormy months of June to September.[28] The annual social season seamlessly transitioned to take place from June until the New Year. Each year, the aristocrats would come to Backlund to attend various banquets, dances, and salons, as per tradition.[29]
After the New Year, they returned to their fiefdoms, spending leisure time hunting. Nobles would host guests of similar status for horse-riding and hunting, generously investing in hounds, particularly the renowned foxhound.[29]
For aristocrats, reaching a consensus on marriage was a lengthy process, typically involving careful consideration and comparison. It wasn't merely a matter between two individuals but also entailed the alliance and mutual support of their families. Hence, although aristocratic women were permitted to attend social events directed by the queen upon turning 18, symbolizing their adulthood and eligibility for marriage, they often didn't start families until around the age of 26, as indicated by statistics.[23]
Likewise, the average age for male aristocrats to enter politics for the first time was approximately 28.5 years.[23]
Fashion[]
Rich and powerful gentlemen of high standing enjoyed wearing black suits comprising of white shirts matched with black vests and trousers. Their colors were relatively monotonous, so they required their male servants, salespeople, and service attendants to dress more brightly and colorfully, in order to distinguish themselves from their masters. In contrast, ladies and mistresses wore dresses of all kinds in glamorous fashions. As such, maidservants would wear black and white.[30]
In the high society, women mainly wore two types of clothing. One was dresses that were either bright or dark colors, and they were bold and liberal in their dressing, allowing one to see the fair flesh at their bosoms or their shoulders. The other type wore pure and fresh colors in relatively conservative dressing. Even their collar bones could hardly be seen. Some of them even had theirs concealed. Based on what Klein knew, this was the difference between married and unmarried women in the Loen Kingdom. As for widows and divorced, they could choose between the two. However, the former tended to choose darker colors.[31]
Language[]
The common language of the Loen Kingdom is Loenese.
Originated from the Ancient Feysac language, which is the root of the language of the Northern Continent. They shared many similarities in sentence structure, meaning, grammar, and word structure.
The children of nobles and of the wealthy class will also learn Ancient Feysac from a young age.[32]
Religion[]
There were three main orthodox beliefs in the Loen Kingdom: the Church of the Evernight Goddess, the Church of the Lord of Storms, and the Church of the God of Steam and Machinery.
The main belief in the Lord of Storms is along the coast of the Midseashire lake and the Sonia Sea. In industrialized cities, the main belief is the God of Steam and Machinery, and the rest mostly believe in the Evernight Goddess.
Each of the three Churches had a church in major cities. Even in a small town, there would be at least two cathedrals, one belonging to the Evernight Goddess and the other, the Lord of Storms.[33]
The three churches generally kept a good relationship with each other and collaborated on many major events. Their Beyonder teams dealt with local cases involving local believers.
The three churches also kept an eye on the important figures in the kingdom, preventing any mythical influences and assassinations.[34]
Because the Church of the Eternal Blazing Sun and the Church of the God of Knowledge and Wisdom were rejected by the Church of the Lord of Storms, while the Church of the Evernight Goddess and the Church of the God of Combat were irreconcilable; among the foreign religions, only the Church of the Earth Mother had obtained the right to preach, but under the tacit suppression from the three Churches. They only had a few churches with very few believers, to the point that they didn’t even need to form a team of Beyonders. And even if they did, they wouldn’t be recognized by the government and couldn’t cooperate with the police department. They would be considered as vigilantes.[35]
After the World War in 1352, God of Steam and Machinery's influence was greatly weakened for supporting the opposite side. As a result, all the high-ranking members of the church, along with their Sealed Artifacts, were expelled from the Kingdom. The church can still preach in the Kingdom due to a large number of believers, however, their state is the same as the previous situation of Church of the Earth Mother.
Due to a lack of official Beyonders in Loen, the Church of the Earth Mother received a request from the Church of Evernight and Storms to set up three to five Beyonder teams in Backlund, the main members are the Sanguines.[36]
Cuisine[]
Tender Pea Stewed Lamb is quite popular, has delicious taste, and is highly recommended.
Southville Beer is the best beer that the Loen Kingdom produced from Southville County.
Education[]
In 1327, the Loen Kingdom had enacted the ‘Basic Education Law.’ A Primary and Secondary Education Committee was established and was specially provided with funding, increasing the kingdom’s investment in education.
Many public primary schools were established to strictly maintain the principle of religious neutrality. This was to prevent education from involving itself in the conflicts between the Lord of Storms, Evernight Goddess, and the God of Steam and Machinery.[32]
The believers of the Lord of Storms believe that girls shouldn’t go to school, but should be homeschooled instead.[34]
Public Schools[]
A public school wasn’t established and maintained by the government. Instead, it was a school that accepted students from the public. It was an evolution of good grammar schools whose goal was to groom graduates so as to enter university. The schools were rather expensive and they would consider the students’ family background. It could even be out the of range of typical middle-class families.[37]
Free Schools[]
In addition, Churches or some charity organizations have provided free schools. From eight to ten o’clock in the evening, the school would be free of charge and would even provide stationery and a certain amount of paper. It was an education that was need-blind, and it would at most involve some religious knowledge. Because there were very few people who volunteered to be teachers in the free school, a unique teaching method was established. Teachers would arrive early, gather the few students who had the best academic progress, imbue them with the content for that day’s class, and then put them in charge of teaching the different classes. The teachers would supervise, correcting any mistakes. It was called a “tutorial system.” Corresponding to the free classes were the free organizations such as the technical workers’ workshop, which were truly accessible to the poor, and one of the few outlets to escape from poverty.[38]
University[]
In the Loen Kingdom, “Professor” was not only a professional title but also a position, just like the combination of professors and department deans on Earth. That meant there could only be one professor in a university’s department. If an associate professor wanted to become a professor, they had to wait for their superior to retire, or force out their superior with their abilities. As talents needed to be retained, the kingdom’s Higher Education Commission had added senior associate professors in the three-level system of lecturers, associate professors, and professors after years of observation. This title was given to anyone with high academic achievements or with enough seniority but did not make it to the position of professor.[39]
The tuition fees of universities such as Tingen, Perth, Khoy, and Backlund and the other universities are roughly the same; the tuition fees of Backlund’s University of Technology and Constant Industry University are roughly the same, half of the previous ones.[13]
Economy[]
Currency[]
The currency of the Loen Kingdom includes copper penny, soli and gold pound. 1 pound = 20 soli, 1 soli = 12 pence.
The list of prices and wages in the Loen Kingdom can be found:
Income Taxes[]
The Loen Kingdom has five kinds of taxes.[40]
- A-type: Related to land, housing, and other earnings from material items. It included property and rent.
- B-type: A tax paid by farmers.
- C-type: A tax on profits from bonds, funds, and equities.
- D-type: For commercial, finance, or professional income.
It is unclear how is specified in D-type. However, Sherlock Moriarty applied 20% D-type taxes when he sold his 10% shares of the Becklund Bicycle Company for 12,000 pounds.[41]
The Loen government has waived taxes for initial investments related to inventions, as a way to foster inventions.[41]
- E-type: A tax when one has salaries exceeded one pound.
Weekly Salary | Rate |
---|---|
Not exceeded 1 pound | 0 |
Earned 1-2 pounds | 3% |
Earned 2-5 pounds | 5% |
Earned 5-10 pounds | 10% |
Earned 10-12 pounds | 15% |
More than 20 pounds | 20% |
Transport[]
Public Horse Carriages[]
In the Loen Kingdom, public horse carriages were placed under two categories—without track and with track.
The carriage without track drawn by two horses and could sit approximately 20 people while taking into account the top of the carriage. Only a general route existed, without specific stations. It had flexible operations and could be hailed anywhere unless it was full.
The carriage with track was operated by the Orbital Carriage Company. First, a rail-like service device was laid on the main street. The horses would move on the inner lane while the wheels ran on the tracks, making it easier and more labor-saving. This could thus pull a bigger double-decker carriage that sat nearly fifty passengers. However, the only problem was that the route and stations were fixed, making many places inaccessible.[42]
Steam Locomotive[]
A train from Tingen City to Backlund takes about four hours. The earliest train is at seven in the morning.[43] A ticket for a luxurious first-class seat cost about three-quarters of a pound, or 15 soli. A second-class seat costs 10 soli, or half a pound. The packed, poorly-maintained third-class seats were rather cheap at only 5 soli.[44]
Airship[]
The airship industry has a long history of development, both for military and civilian use. For example, the airship route from Backlund to Desi Bay was opened in 1349.[45] Airships were also used commercially to deliver flowers to the nobles.[46]
An airship from Desi bay to Southern Continent takes two to three days. Even if there’s a storm on the way, requiring a detour of the sea route, it will still take a maximum of a week.[47]
Metro[]
Backlund's metro was born in 1324. It first connected both banks of the Tussock River and had now expanded to the key city boroughs.[48]
