— Madam Magician to Lumian on Circle of Inevitability, Chapter 263 |
The ancient Tree of Shadow predates the construction of present-day Trier, its roots buried deep underground. It brings delight and sustenance to the people of Trier. With the aid of the devil lineage and devoted followers, the ambiance in Trier gradually transformed according to the Mother Tree of Desire's desired path. Year after year, the people of Trier showered it with various excessive desires, providing it with nourishment.[1]
In 1358 the Bliss Society attempted to submerge the Tree of Shadow into the depths of Fourth Epoch Trier and extend it into the Astral World.[1]
Appearance[]
A colossal brownish-green tree, its branches spreading in every direction.[2] Through the power of the Mystery Prying Glasses, Lumian witnessed an immense network of brownish-green roots extending in all directions, reaching into the distance and disappearing into the void.[3] After stabbing the tree with Fallen Mercury, Lumian witnessed a scene where its roots extended towards the depths of an ancient structure, consumed by an unseen flame that silently burned in the darkness, casting an eerie glow over the surroundings.[4]
Upon its emergence from the ground, the tree crowns above seemed to grow increasingly ethereal as they reached skyward, extending into an otherworldly realm.[5] Interwoven roots sprouted from the earth, connecting the fragmented sections. Originating from the central brownish-green tree, these roots expanded outward, layer by layer, growing denser as they approached the core.[6] Massive, damp, pale flowers began to bloom one after another.[7]
According to Termiboros, The tree possesses a certain living characteristic. It's akin to a mythical treant that hasn’t fully developed its intelligence.[7]
History[]
The Tree of Shadow had been nurtured by the abnormal desires of Trier's residents for one to two millennia, each piece of bark on the tree likely represents specific human activities from different eras, layered upon one another, carrying the weight of history and the intricacies of humanity.[6]
The Tree of Shadow has appeared multiple times in Trier’s history, but it has never been fully resolved.[8] This is because, after being nourished and exerting influence for over a thousand years, the Tree of Shadow has become one with Trier, becoming akin to its shadow and dark aspect. Unless the city is obliterated and every inhabitant exterminated, not even a True God could fully eradicate it. However, by doing so, the other perils lurking beneath Trier would become uncontrollable. In the first place, nobody realized the secret planting of the Tree of Shadow due to the urgency of constructing the city and countering certain underground threats.[9]
Susanna Matisse mentioned to Hugues Artois that the Bliss Society's plan is to submerge the Tree of Shadow into the depths of Fourth Epoch Trier and extend it into the Astral World.[1]
In year 1358 of the Fifth Epoch, the Tree of Shadow emerged from the underground cover on the Auberge du Coq Doré Hotel. Lumian Lee was trapped in the isolated environment within the Tree by Charlotte Calvino and Susanna Matisse as they planned to sacrifice him and Termiboros to the Mother Tree of Desire.[8]
Termiboros instructed Lumian to use Fallen Mercury to make the Montsouris Ghost attack the Tree of Shadow. To stop this, Susanna Matisse recites the honorific name of Abomination Suah just as Madam Magician arrives at the scene.[4]
Saint Viève entered an alternate space in the Tree through a starlight door made by Madam Magician. There, "She" and the other official Beyonders fought the Abomination.[8]
Charlotte Calvino was killed by the combined efforts of Lumian, Franca and Anthony Reid.[10]
Lumian stabbed the Tree of Shadow with Fallen Mercury and bestowed Susanna the fate of the Tree of Shadow’s root being consumed by an underground fire which reduced her to ashes.[11]
